Even though he was invited to sit on Johnny Carson's couch way back in 1990, ventriloquist and standup comedian Jeff Dunham didn't truly break through until 2006 when his first special aired on the Comedy Central network. Born in 1962 in Dallas, TX, Dunham's 1990 Tonight Show appearance coincided with a role on the television special Jonathan Winters and His Traveling Road Show. He then spent years on the road, averaging 250 dates a year, – and made talk show appearances on Ellen, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, Late Show with David Letterman, and The Tonight Show, but this time with Jay Leno as host. By 2004, his act had evolved into a rebellion against political correctness so an appearance on the Blue Collar TV show was well timed. Dunham and his grumpy old man puppet Walter were a huge hit on the show, drawing the attention of the Comedy Central network, who gave the ventriloquist his own hour-long special in 2006. Titled Jeff Dunham: Arguing with Myself, the special earned a Platinum sales award when it was issued on DVD that same year. A year later ,the special Jeff Dunham: Spark of Insanity introduced the controversial character Achmed the Dead Terrorist, a skeleton with a turban plus the catchphrase “I Keel You!”. A hit with the ventriloquist's ever-growing audience, Achmed was back for 2008's Jeff Dunham's Very Special Christmas Special which, by the end of the year, would become Dunham's third DVD to sell over a million copies. At the same time, the CD Don't Come Home for Christmas landed with Walter singing “I Hate Christmas” while Achmed offered “Jingle Bombs”. In 2009, Dunham signed a deal with Comedy Central network to produce his own television series.

Ennio Morricone is probably the most famous film composer of the 20th century. He is also one of the most prolific composers working in any medium. No exact figure is available, but he's scored several hundred films over the past several decades, perhaps as many as 500. While these have been in almost every imaginable musical style (and for almost every imaginable kind of movie), he is most identified with the “spaghetti Western” style of soundtracks, which he pioneered when providing the musical backdrop for the films of director Sergio Leone. Morricone's palette is extraordinarily diverse, drawing from classical, jazz, pop, rock, electronic, avant-garde, and Italian music, among other styles. Esteemed by such important figures in modern music as John Zorn (not to mention contemporary directors like Martin Scorsese), he is increasingly placed among not just the finest soundtrack composers, but the most important contemporary composers of any sort.

Reel Big Fish were one of the legions of Southern California ska-punk bands to edge into the mainstream following the mid-'90s success of No Doubt and Sublime. Like most of their peers, they were distinguished by their hyperkinetic stage shows, juvenile humor, ironic covers of new wave pop songs, and metallic shards of ska. The group cultivated an underground following that broke into the mainstream in summer 1997, when the single “Sell Out” became a modern rock radio and MTV favorite. Reel Big Fish's popularity gradually waned in the subsequent years, following the decline of ska-punk as a marketable genre. Nevertheless, the band restructured its lineup and continued issuing new material to a smaller (yet considerably rabid) fan base.

Compton, California’s Kendrick Lamar initially rapped as K. Dot and released a series of mixtapes under that name. Youngest Head N***a in Charge (2003), Training Day (2005), and C4 (2009) preceded his decision to go by his birth name. Overly Dedicated, released in 2010, was the first Kendrick Lamar mixtape and fared well enough to enter Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart that October. Lamar’s first official album was released the following year; Section.80, issued on Top Dawg Entertainment, entered the Billboard 200 at number 113. From 2009 through 2011, he appeared on tracks by Big Pooh, Jay Rock, Tech N9ne, and Game.

Led by guitarist/vocalist Gavin Rossdale, Bush became the first post-Nirvana British band to hit it big in America. Of course, they became a hit by playing by the grunge rules — they had loud guitars, guttural vocals, stop-start rhythms, and extreme dynamics. Formed in late 1992 by Rossdale, Bush landed an American record deal before they had a British label. Sixteen Stone, their debut album produced by Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley (producers of early-'80s hits by Madness and Elvis Costello, among others), was released in late 1994 by Interscope Records. By the end of December, Bush's “Everything Zen” video had landed in MTV's Buzz Bin and the album began to take off; by spring of 1995, the record had gone gold, despite a stack of bad reviews. By that time, the band was successful enough in the U.S. to land a British record deal, although they weren't able to match their American success in the U.K.
Americana singer/songwriter Ryan Bingham was raised in rural Texas, where years of hardscrabble ranch work and rodeo competitions would later lend a sense of authenticity to his music. Living alone since his mid-teens, Bingham shuttled back and forth between Southwestern border towns and relatives' homes, often sleeping in his truck after rodeo shows. It was during those treks that he began entertaining friends with the guitar, an instrument he'd learned at the age of 17 from a mariachi neighbor. Drawing inspiration from Bob Dylan, Marshall Tucker, and Bob Wills — all of whom populated the jukebox of The Halfway Bar, a roadhouse owned by Bingham's uncle (whose musical tastes influenced those of his nephew) — Bingham fashioned a road-weary sound that piqued the interest of a barroom proprietor in Stephenville, TX. Bingham was offered a weekly residency at the bar; soon after, he began issuing self-released albums like Lost Bound Rails and Wishbone Saloon. The material was brought to the attention of Nashville heavyweights Lost Highway Records, who signed Bingham and issued his major-label debut, Mescalito (featuring production by Marc Ford, former guitarist for the Black Crowes), in October 2007.

Offering a mostly acoustic and hushed hybrid of alternative folk and soul, Lianne La Havas was born and raised in London, England, the daughter of a Jamaican mother and Greek father. The singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist was a member of the Paris Parade with Christian Pinchbeck (a future member of Elephant), but the act proved to be short-lived. La Havas eventually shifted to solo work and released Lost & Found, a four-track EP featuring a duet with Willy Mason, in October 2011. Two months later — the same month she opened for Bon Iver during a North American tour — it was announced that she had been nominated for the BBC's Sound of 2012 poll. Is Your Love Big Enough?, La Havas' debut album for Warner Bros., was released in the U.K. in July 2012; the U.S. release through Nonesuch followed a month later. The set was produced almost entirely by songwriting partner Matt Hales (aka Aqualung).

Las Vegas-based indie rockers Imagine Dragons formed in Provo, Utah in 2009. Like their desert-born, stadium rock contemporaries the Killers, the band blends engaging, synth-based dance-pop with emotionally charged, Brit-pop-inspired alt rock. After releasing a pair of well-received EPs (Imagine Dragons and Hell and Silence), the group inked a deal with Interscope Record and headed into Hollywood's famed Westlake studios with producer Alex Da Kid (Eminem, Paramore) to record their first major-label release, 2012's Continued Silence EP.
